A member of the prominent Rockefeller family was killed in a small plane crash this morning in Harrison, New York.

PURCHASE - The stormy weather has delayed the NTSB's investigation into a single plane crash that left the pilot dead.

Pilot Richard Rockefeller, a doctor and the great-grandson of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, was flying back to his home in Maine after celebrating his father's 99th birthday. Minutes after takeoff, the plane went down in a wooded residential area on Cottage Avenue in Purchase. Officials say fragments of the plane were scattered over a 300-foot area.

Westchester County Airport Manager Peter Scherrer says they did not have any indication of any problems and did not receive a mayday distress call from Rockefeller. Scherrer says the weather was very foggy Friday morning, making it not optimal for flying.

Officials say it was remarkable no fire sparked from the crash since the plane had a full tank of gas.
