The city of Newburgh has passed a budget that cuts eight of the crime-ridden city's police officers.
City Council members voted on the highly criticized and controversial budget Monday night in front of a roomful of taxpayers and police.
The city has the highest crime rate in the state and one of the highest in the nation. It has also been the site of three massive FBI gang raids within the last two years.
Police say that they are already suffering from a manpower shortage and don't have enough officers to answers all the calls.
The mayor of Newburgh hopes to save the police jobs much like the City Council did last year with the fire department. A contract meeting with the Newburgh PBA is scheduled for Dec. 15.
