Accused cop killer faces judge
Accused cop killer Eric Frein was charged with first-degree murder Friday after eluding Pennsylvania police for 48 days.
Frein was captured Thursday by U.S. Marshals near an empty airport hangar about 30 miles from Pocono Mountain police barracks. Investigators say that's where Frein opened fire on Pennsylvania State troopers back on Sept. 12, killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson and seriously injuring another officer.
Frein was escorted into a court appearance this Friday morning in handcuffs and was jeered by local residents who were upset by the attack and subsequent manhunt.
Lt. Col. George Bivens, of the Pennsylvania State Police, says he characterizes Frein's actions as "pure evil" and says Frein had a mission to kill. The nearly two-month manhunt forced many schools to close in the Poconos and even led to extra security over the border into New York at schools in northwestern Orange County.
A judge sent Frein to jail without bail, pending his next court appearance. Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty.
