Airmont's zoning codes once again headed to Federal Court
Airmont village trustees are once again facing discrimination charges from the federal government over its zoning code.
According to a suit filed late Friday, the US Attorney General charges the Rockland village's ban on board schools is a violation of "the religious educational experience" the Hasidic faith mandates.
In its regular practice, a Hasidic congregation in the Village of Airmont sends its males to a boarding school when they reach the age of 15 ... "in order tominimize outside influences and to intensify the religious learningexperience."
In 1991, the government alleged in a lawsuit that Airmont, whichwas incorporated a few months earlier in five square miles on theborder of New Jersey, was founded to exclude Orthodox Jews and didso by prohibiting prayer services in homes. Airmont was forced toamend its zoning code to allow such services.
Similarly, the new lawsuit alleges that Airmont imposed the banon boarding schools "to prevent Hasidic boarding schools fromoperating in Airmont."
