The U.S. Justice Department says it will fund voluntary tracking devices for at-risk children.

State Assemblyman Tom Abinanti is calling for legislation known as “Avonte’s Law” to be adopted statewide.

His announcement comes after Senator Chuck Schumer’s introduction of the legislation last weekend. "Avonte's Law" was introduced in an effort to prevent future tragedies like the recent death of Avonte Oquendo. The 14-year-old with autism was found dead along the East River this month after walking out of his school in Queens nearly 4 months ago.

State Assemblyman Tom Abinanti tells News 12 that "Avonte's Law" would give tracking bracelets to children with developmental disabilities. Abinanti adds that if any children were to wander, police would go into action and help them.

Abinanti wants the program to be adopted on a statewide basis. "All people of New York State deserve this kind of protection," says Abinanti.
