Authorities in Rockland County want to create a database of homes and businesses with security cameras in the hope of solving crimes faster and more effectively.
Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco says he wants to know which businesses and homes have security cameras so his detectives know precisely where to knock after a crime or terrorist incident occurs.
“We take the Boston bombing - we wouldn't have been able to solve that without that video. We take the Chelsea explosion. That would likely not been solved without video,” says Falco.
Falco says the database, called Project Community Eyes, is modeled on safety protocol for the world's biggest terror target only 40 miles to the south.
“We're trying to mirror ourselves after, somewhat, the real time center in New York City,” he says.
Anthony Rapini, who has security cameras all over Calabria Pizza in New City, says he is fine turning over his video to the police.
“If I can help in any situation to catch the bad guy, who don't want to catch a bad guy?” he says.
Some residents also say that the idea of a surveillance database could also help deter crime.
Clarkstown police are also asking residents and businesses to register their privately owned surveillance systems with the town.
The average person is on security cameras up to 100 times a day.
