MOUNT VERNON - Labor Day weekend means summer vacation is drawing to an end, but children were all smiles at an event in Mount Vernon on Sunday.

Mount Calvary Church on Second Avenue held a back-to-school barbecue with music, games and plenty of food. The church also gave away hundreds of free backpacks for those in need.

Broadway's Douglas Baldeo, age 10, was on hand for the fun. The Mount Vernon boy plays one of the lead characters in the Tony Award-winning musical "Kinky Boots." Baldeo donated $500 for school supplies and food.

"I just wanted to help other kids in need because I just like helping people," Baldeo said.
