A 10-year-old cancer patient from Rockland got an early Christmas surprise Saturday, thanks to the hard work from volunteers at “Baking Memories 4 Kids.”
Zoey Nieves and her family are going on an all-expenses-paid trip to Disney World, which includes stops at all three of their theme parks.
Baking Memories 4 Kids is a Rockland-based foundation that mobilizes hundreds of volunteers to bake cookies. The sales from the batches fund the Disney trips for kids with life threatening and terminal illnesses.
Zoey was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last February. Her mother Maria Villalobos says she has been a fighter.
“If she can do it, than we can do to it,” she says. “We can be strong."
Over the last six years, Baking Memories has given 145 children and their families a break from their battle to send them to the Magic Kingdom.
Foundation founder Frank Squeo is a cancer survivor. He lauded the volunteers that make the trips happen.
"They get up early on the weekends and spend the whole day making cookies. It’s like Santa times 100," he says.
