BK Democracy Academy gets indoor hydroponic farm units

The Brooklyn Democracy Academy in Brownsville is receiving four brand-new, indoor hydroponic farm units to grow leafy greens with no soil -- only water, nutrients and LED lights.
The fresh produce will be handed out to senior centers, NYCHA residents, community organizations, the homeless and families in need.
The farms are possible through $20,000 in discretionary funding from Borough President Eric Adams and a partnership with Farmshelf, a company that builds indoor farms with the technology that makes it easy to grow fresh food year-round.
The goal is to help end food insecurity, provide healthy options in so-called food deserts like Brownsville and lower the rates of obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.
The project is helping the school expand its existing urban farm program for students.
