Turn To Tara has uncovered a major tax blunder in Rockland County that is costing tens of thousands of homeowners hundreds of dollars in property tax increases this summer.
In Spring Valley, despite the state's property tax cap, some residents got slapped with an increase of more than $1,000 in just one year. And village officials don't appear to have done much to address the problem.
Issues began after the village fired its assessor and began using the services of the surrounding towns. But Ramapo and Clarkstown apply different formulas, which resulted in dramatic tax increases for homeowners.
Marie Toussant is a nurse and single mother whose taxes spiked.
"In a year, your property value cannot go up 200 percent," she says.
In response, state Sen. David Carlucci sent a letter to the state comptroller asking for an audit of Spring Valley's finances. And he's demanding that the village do a better job of informing residents there is a new program that could reimburse those who have paid the extra taxes.
"It's outrageous that property taxes are already crushing residents in the community," Carlucci says. "To see an outrageous increase of 20 or 30 percent in one year? That's the difference of staying your home or having to move out."
