Bomb threats force evacuation of Tappan Zee H.S.
A series of bomb threats called into Tappan Zee High School Thursday disrupted classes and forced a cancellation of school for the day.
About 1,000 students were evacuated onto an athletic field after a bomb threat was phoned in to the school around 11:30 a.m. The school was locked down immediately. The Rockland County Bomb Squad did a thorough check of the building using bomb-sniffing dogs.
Nothing was found. After about two hours, students and staff were allowed back inside the building - but not for long. A second phone call came in shortly after students returned to classes. The caller claimed there was a bomb still inside the building. Students were dismissed for the day and all after-school activities were canceled.
A dozen different school districts in northern New Jersey also closed Thursday because of a widespread bomb threat. Tappan Zee High School is expected to reopen at its normal time Friday.
