A Brooklyn artist aims to unite his community by painting murals of fallen officers.
Kenny Altidor has a passion for creating art on the streets of Brooklyn. He says he learned how to paint as a child growing up in Haiti when an artist took him under his wing.
After being laid off from his job at Bloomberg, his painting passion became his career.
In 2006, Altidor took on a new venture to paint fallen heroes for their families and communities as a gift. One of his first murals honored fallen NYPD officers Jeff Herman and Russel Timoshenko. They were both killed in the line of duty in Crown Heights.
Most recently, he has painted the fallen NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia. Earlier this month, the mural was unveiled at a ceremony outside the 46th Precinct where the officer worked in the Bronx.
Altidor says his portraits aren't always met with positive reactions. He says the negativity of others drives him to work harder in his purpose to build a better relationship between police and the community.
The artist also works with kids from Canarsie and NYPD officers to organize community cleanups.
