A college student from the Bronx has been indicted for selling dozens of firearms to an undercover officer.
In the wake of the tragic Harlem shooting, the fight to get guns off the streets of our city continues.
Shakor Rodriguez, a 23-year-old Bronx native, was attending college in Clarksville, Tennesse and allegedly brought 73 guns up to New York, police say. Authorities claim Rodriguez would sometimes hide them in a duffle bag while traveling by bus. The NYPD was able to stop those guns from going into the city streets.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewall say Rodriguez has now been indicted on hundreds of counts of criminal sale of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm and related charges for trafficking 73 weapons and high capacity magazines in Bronx and Manhattan.
The investigation was conducted by the NYPD Firearms Investigations Unit and the Bronx District Attorney's Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau between July 17, 2020 and Dec. 22, 2021, and called Operation Overnight Express. Fifty-nine of the 73 firearms sold to the undercover officer by Rodriguez were loaded and cost about $1,000 to $1,500 per gun.
Officials say Rodriguez sold most of his guns near the vicinity of his home near Weeks and Nelson avenues in the Bronx with multiple sales near Allen Street in Manhattan. Police are still investigating how the guns were purchased, but Rodriguez has been charged on two indictments totaling 304 counts. He was arraigned just days ago on 79 counts and will be back in court on Jan. 31.
