The northbound side of the New York State Thruway was closed for part of Thursday afternoon when a tour bus carrying 60 children caught fire and exploded.
The fire occurred at about noon between exits 15A and 16 in Tuxedo and had traffic backed up for miles.
According to officials, the driver smelled smoke and then noticed that his engine was on fire. He acted quickly to evacuate all of the passengers from the bus.
The bus, which is owned by Monsey Tours, LLC in New Square, was carrying children from Brooklyn and Long Island to a camp in the Catskills.
Authorities say no one was injured.
