A plan to build a mental health facility on Macombs Road is going forward despite community opposition. Services for the Underserved's plan to provide housing for 48 people recovering from mental illnesses has been given the OK by the Buildings Department. However, some of the building's future neighbors are not happy with the plan. One resident questions who exactly will be living in the building and if they will be homeless or have drug addictions. Another resident says the area has enough facilities similar to the proposed building, and would have hoped for a new school, a senior center or other development to bring in more business. Services for the Underserved insists it is not like other facilities because this will be a permanent residence with an on-site staff to assist those living there. The group says other facilities only serve as shelters or transitional housing. It says the project is funded by the Department of Health and expects construction to begin in spring of 2007.
