Capt. Clayton Carpenter, of Cortlandt Manor, dies in helicopter crash in Georgia
CORTLANDT MANOR - Cortlandt Manor residents are mourning the loss of a local soldier who was killed in a helicopter crash last week in Georgia.
Military officials say Capt. Clayton Carpenter, 31, was piloting a Blackhawk helicopter Thursday during a routine training exercise when it made a hard landing. Two others were injured in the crash at Hunter Army Airfield, just outside of Savannah, Georgia.
Carpenter attended Walter Panas High School and graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 2005. He is survived by his parents and his brother.
Military officials say he became a platoon leader of the Night Stalkers Regiment last year, the highly specialized unit that helped capture Osama bin Laden. While stationed in Hawaii, he flew Blackhawk helicopters.
