The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring a severe mumps outbreak that has infected hundreds in the Hudson Valley, Brooklyn and New Jersey.
According to the CDC, the total number of cases of the virus in New York and New Jersey has already surpassed 1,500. More than 300 cases have been registered in Rockland and more than 600 in Orange.
The mumps cases in Rockland and Orange are mainly affecting the Jewish Orthodox community. The outbreak apparently started last summer at a boys' camp in the Catskills.
