YONKERS - The City of Peekskill is mourning the death of one of its police officers.

Christopher Vazeos was found dead of an apparent suicide inside his home on Welcher Avenue early Saturday morning. The 49-year-old is being mourned by his wife, children and all the officers he served alongside at the Peekskill Police Department.

Neighbors, also saddened, say Vazeos and his family had only lived on their street for about five months, but had already made his way into their hearts. They say he once jumped into the Hudson River to rescue an elderly couple from their wrecked vehicle.

Vazeos was a 23-year veteran of the force.
