College president joins call to lower drinking age
Manhattanville College President Richard Berman and 99 other college presidents are questioning whether lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18 would curtail binge drinking. ?We believe that colleges have to be involved in society, that we can't live in isolation,? says Berman. However, Carole Sears, whose husband was killed by a 24-year-old-drunk driver, says lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatalities. ?They're still at the age when they think they're immortal and nothing's going to happen. As you get a little older you realize that's simply not true,? says Sears.Students have mixed feelings about the idea. Some say drinking will start even earlier if the age is lowered. Others say the United States should take a cue from foreign countries where there is no legal drinking age.
