Cops arrest 2 in attempted copper pipe burglary
Two Stony Point men were arrested Friday after exiting a building they were casing to steal and sell its copper pipes, police say.
A Haverstraw police officer who was on patrol spotted the men coming out of an abandoned building behind Willow Grove Middle School. Police say the officer detained Richard Garrison, but his alleged partner, Joseph Squillante, took off running.
Police say a Rockland County Sheriff?s Department helicopter tracked Squillante as dozens of officers were led into the woods along the Palisades Parkway. The officers searched for about an hour and the search was temporarily called off.
Squillante was then spotted running around the Hudson Valley Developmental Disabilities Services Office. "Three cops come in here, flying through here, they ask us, ?What [did] you see? Did you see some guy running [through] here?? ? recalls one witness. ?I said, ?Yea,? and that's it - they caught him."
Orangetown police say Squillante was arrested in July for allegedly stealing close to $2,000 worth of metal pipes from the Rockland Psychiatric Center. Police have not yet detailed what exactly was taken from the building. Both suspects could now face multiple charges including burglary, grand larceny and criminal mischief.
