Cops tap surveillance camera to nab 3 in bat beating
Middletown police arrested three men involved in a gang-related brawl outside a bar Saturday and credited surveillance cameras with enabling them to nab them.
Three men are seen beating two other men with a bat outside Perla Escondida on the surveillance tape. The tape also captured the men?s license plate number when they tried to flee.
Samuel Diaz, 22, Antonio Mendoza, 22 and Steven Caceres, 26, were all arrested on assault charges. Caceres also faces a weapons charge. He's the one cops say used the bat to beat the two men.
?More than likely if the suspects had fled, without the camera, we probably wouldn't have been able to make an arrest,? says Lt. Paul Rickard.
The camera has been outside the bar since May. It?s one of 16 cameras around the city that police constantly monitor. Officer Michael Brownstein says the cameras made all the difference in the case.
