The Newburgh School District has offered to cover the salaries of three veteran police officers to prevent gang violence in city schools.
The decision comes after 17-year-old Levi King Flores was stabbed to death in a gang-related fight, allegedly by a 13-year-old, sparking extreme tensions.
"I believe it's going to be extraordinarily helpful, especially with what's going on," says Newburgh Police Chief Eric Paolilli.
The officers were taken out of schools in January because of the cost. They returned temporarily following the Flores murder, but were later pulled out again.
Following spring break, the officers will be back patrolling the hallways of Newburgh Middle School and Newburgh High School.
