With six confirmed cases of coronavirus, the City of Yonkers will close all schools on Friday to prepare the district in the event of a possible exposure there.
School Superintendent Edwin Quezada canceled classes for the roughly 27,000 students who attend the city schools.
Quezada asked educators to prepare additional material for the students so that they have instructional materials in case the schools remain closed for a prolonged period.
The more than three dozen schools in the district will also get additional deep cleaning on Friday.
Yonkers city officials are also stepping up efforts to contain and slow the spread of the coronavirus by canceling non-essential programs.
"That will include, the recreational parks, all of our senior programs, Murray Rink, the mobile tax office, the public programs at all libraries," said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.
The school district will also cancel building permits for all outside agencies that conduct some after-school programs.
Classes are expected to resume at all Yonkers public schools on Monday.
