MONTEBELLO - Firefighters battled a 5-acre brush fire Saturday afternoon in Montebello along Haverstraw Road.

The blaze broke out just after 3 p.m., and took more than 45 firefighters from seven departments over three hours to calm the situation. Officials say the challenge was to quickly extinguish the flames before they could spread to a nearby gas line.

Neighbors say there were flames shooting up trees and running along the ground.

Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is still unknown.
