CHAPPAQUA - Firefighters swarmed a house in Chappaqua that went up in flames today as thick, hazy smoke poured through its roof, but it was all in the name of practice.

A homeowner contacted fire officials with an offer to let local fire crews get some real-life training battling a house fire at his home before it was to be knocked down.

The home was set ablaze using controlled burns, and firefighters practiced searching for occupants in the smoky interior.

Six fire departments participated in the training: Chappaqua, Mount Kisco, Bedford, Bedford Hills, Katonah and Armonk.

The homeowner says a month of planning plus lots of permits and paperwork went into organizing the training event.
