Cross County Shopping Center celebrates 60th anniversary

YONKERS - A Yonkers landmark celebrated its 60th anniversary on Monday.

The Cross County Shopping Center opened its doors on April 28, 1954. It was the first large-scale mall in Westchester.

A ceremony took place to mark the anniversary of the outdoor mall. Local dignitaries such as Mayor Mike Spano gathered to honor one of the oldest malls in the country. The event was hosted by News 12's Tara Rosenblum.

Gimbels was the anchor store back in the 1950s and was the place for community events. Even Jackie Robinson visited the mall in 1954 when the doors first opened.

To honor the anniversary, items were dropped into a time capsule that is not to be opened until 2029.

The celebration will continue throughout the year with social media contests and promotions being held from June through August.
