CARMEL - The late David Bruen, the first Putnam County executive, is being honored today for his many years of service to the county.

Bruen, who was 84 when he died Feb. 1, is lying in state today at the Putnam County Courthouse in Carmel. 

Bruen served as county clerk for 18 years before being elected county executive in 1978. The Putnam County Office Building is now named for him.

A wake was held Tuesday afternoon at the Beecher Funeral Home in Brewster, where he lived all his life. His funeral will be Wednesday morning at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Brewster.
