Demolition derby plumber wins $1M in lotto
A Middletown plumbing salesman was presented with a prize check of $1,000,000 for winning the New York Lottery Wednesday.
Richard Plant, who is also a veteran of the Orange County Fair Speedway, was joined by modified dirt racing champion Steve Dodd for the presentation. Plant's initial plans for the extra dough are to make home repairs, pay off debt and treat his wife and daughters to a vacation at Disney World.
Plant's payday comes from playing the $500 Million Extravaganza instant scratch-off game. He has chosen a payment plan that will give him $50,000 a year for the next 20 years.
The lucky man now plans on resuming an old love - competing in demolition derbies.
"You think it's fun hitting somebody in the parking lot? Try doing it in the demo derby where it's legal," he says.
The father of two says he and his wife will continue to work, but the winnings will help the family get off a "shoestring budget."
