Loved ones gathered in White Plains Saturday to remember an off-duty Mount Vernon police officer who was killed in a friendly-fire incident.

On a rainy day, 12 years ago, 23-year-old Christopher Ridley was in plain clothes when he tried to break up a fight on the streets of White Plains.

Four Westchester County police officers responded and fired upon Ridley, killing him. They have maintained that Ridley didn't identified himself.

The officers involved were found not liable by a federal grand jury. The shooting prompting special training for police officers when encountering off-duty officers.

The Westchester County Board of Legislators approved $150,000 to fund Ridley’s permanent memorial at 85 Court St. in White Plains.
