The owner of a Dunkin' Donuts in Paterson has died after he was struck by a van in a drive-thru, the shop's manager tells News 12 New Jersey.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dunkin' Donuts near Route 20. Police said a van passing through the drive-thru lane struck 65-year-old Jose Furtado, of Haledon, as he was sweeping up leaves.
Furtado was rushed to a local hospital where he later died.
Police said the 59-year-old driver and his 15-year-old passenger stayed at the scene. No charges have been filed.
The manager of the Dunkin' Donuts said the shop was closed Thursday evening but reopened Friday morning.
"(Furtado) was always doing work. He was always in the back, and he would come to the front every now and then. The staff here is excellent. They always get you in and out really quick. (They're) very friendly, very professional," customer Donnie Wilson said.
Police are reviewing surveillance video from the crash.
