Electrical problem sparks shutdown of Indian Point 3
Indian Point 3 nuclear power plant was shut down Friday after operators saw electric sparks on metal scaffolding under a generator.
Jim Steets, spokesperson for plant owner Entergy, says the manual shutdown was accomplished safely without injuries or release of radioactivity. He says he thought the plant would be back in service by Sunday night. Steets said the arcing of sparks were apparently caused by metal scaffolding coming too close to a series of electrical connections.
Indian Point 3 produces 1,000 megawatts of power. Officials say Friday?s demand in power was well below capacity and the sudden cut in supply should have no effect on consumers.
