Elections officials expected a larger than normal turnout on primary day, and experts say President Donald Trump is the reason, even though his name is nowhere to be found on the ballot.
The governor's race was the big draw on Thursday’s ballot, but voters said a multitude of important issues like taxes and the environment were the driving forces sending them to the polls.
During the last gubernatorial primary, only 13 percent of voters turned out. Elections officials predicted turnout could reach as high as 20 percent this year.
“Thank God for Trump. We're finally waking up to realize if we're going to have life, liberty and a pursuit of happiness, we have to get out to vote every time,” said Jerry Kyberg, of Dobbs Ferry.
Margarite McHale, of Yonkers, wouldn't let a recent hip surgery keep her from voting. She dislikes the president and his policy and was supporting Democrats who will fight against him.
“We need strong unity, make a strong statement that we're not going to put up with all the stuff going on,” she says.
