The lawyer for the mother of a student who was stabbed to death last September is speaking out after a graphic exposé about her son's death was published in the New York Post.
Matthew McCree was 15 years old when police say he was stabbed to death by 18-year-old Abel Cedeno. Cedeno was said to have been bullied at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation for his sexuality, but the New York Post reports that his teachers and classmates say there's more to the story.
They are placing blame on the school's disciplinary approach.
The article sparked a news conference Monday afternoon.. The lawyer said the article insinuates administrators couldn't maintain proper discipline, saying administrators focused more on rewarding good behavior amongst problematic students instead of punishing. According to the article, it meant less suspensions and less order in the school.
Witnesses tell the New York Post that the stabbing happened after the suspect was possibly hit with a spitball. They say Cedeno escalated the situation by pulling out a knife and lunging at the teen.
McCree's lawyer says more needs to be done to prevent violence like this from happening in city schools. He also says metal detectors should have been place in the school after a request from a school administrator.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Education on the report but has not heard back yet.
