Father of slain Newburgh boy sues state
Yul Bookal, the father of the 4-year-old boy who was found dead after disappearing in December of 2009, has filed a lawsuit against the state of New York, claiming that the parole board allowed the man accused in the murder to live with the child.
Cory Byrd currently stands accused of killing Mark Bookal.
The lawsuit alleges the state knew that Byrd had a history of violence against children, but it was ignored. It also claims that the state investigated claims that the child was burned by Byrd, but still did nothing to remove the ex-convict.
Bookal's attorney, Paul Brite, says the state did a poor job of supervising Byrd's parole since he had been convicted of drug use and beating his own infant son.
