Indian Point 2 was taken off line after workers discovered a problem with a regulating valve.
Indian Point 2 was shut down at approximately 3:45 p.m. Monday after workers determined that the valve could not be repaired while operating. The valve is on the non-nuclear side of the plant. Officials say while unit 2 is off line and not generating any electricity during the repairs, Indian Point 3 is operating at 100 percent.
A spokesperson for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) says it is too early to tell if any action will be taken against the plant. According to the NRC, the latest problem is not considered an unplanned shutdown since the reactor is still running, although at reduced power.
Indian Point officials say the hope to have Indian Point 2 back on line by the weekend. They say there should be enough reserve electricity in the grid to avoid any outages in the area.
