FBI joins New Square arson probe
Two weeks after New Square resident Aron Rottenberg was burned in an alleged religious dispute, the FBI is now joining local investigators to see if any federal crimes were committed.
In addition to the attack that left Rottenberg burned over half of his body, the FBI will also be investigating months of reports of vandalism, harassment, and threats in the New Square community. The FBI's focus will be on whether any violations of the 1964 Civil Rights Act occurred. Local residents welcome the news, saying extra help for local police is always a good thing.
Rottenberg is still recovering at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, after he was allegedly set on fire by 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer. According to police, Spitzer tried to burn Rottenberg's house down because he didn't worship at the village's main synagogue. Spitzer is facing attempted arson and murder charges.
