YONKERS - Metro-North is in the hot seat once again this morning after a worker from Yonkers was struck and killed by a train in Manhattan while on the job.

James Romansoff, 58, of Yonkers, was part of a Metro-North crew restoring tracks that had been closed for weekend maintenance. The eight-year veteran was working on tracks near East 106th Street and Park Avenue when he was struck and killed by a train just before 1 a.m. on Monday. He is the second Metro-North worker to be killed while working on the tracks in less than a year.

The railroad recently installed safety hardware called the Enhanced Employee Protection system or EEP. It's designed to block a dispatcher from sending trains down a section of tracks that are off-line until workers on site send back a signal giving the green light.

EEP was installed after another worker was killed in Connecticut last May.

According to Metro-North officials, the track work was completed Monday and the crews had been turning on power, plus the EEP was in place when Romansoff was fatally struck.

This marks the fifth serious incident to affect Metro-North in less than a year, including December's deadly train derailment in the Bronx that killed four people.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration are now investigating the incident.
