Following News 12 Hudson Valley?s report that thousands of confidential documents had been left compromised, the files have been secured, but the company allegedly responsible for leaving the papers unguarded maintains silence.

Piles of papers belonging to clients of Community Acceptance mortgage company were discovered inside an unlocked basement storage space on Lafayette Avenue in Suffern.

Last year, the mortgage company moved its offices out of the Lafayette Avenue building. Another tenant, Suffern Locksmith, took over the storage area, and owner Paul Costakis found the compromised files, which contain Social Security and bank account numbers.

Costakis says Rick McClain, president of Community Acceptance, came to Suffern Monday and took away all the files after Costakis received permission from the police and McClain?s lawyer.

"He seemed very sincere, and I took him for his word," Costakis says. ?He seemed as if he did everything he could to keep it on the straight and narrow."

Upon leaving Suffern, Community Acceptance transferred to Mahwah, N.J., but after getting evicted for failure to pay rent, the company moved out again, leaving more personal files behind.

McClain?s attorney, Robert Reda, released a statement saying his client was ?shocked to hear about these events, but also pleased to learn...that no individual?s personal information was disclosed.?

Reda also said that all the files have since been shredded by a licensed company.
