A kitchen fire in Spring Valley Tuesday afternoon displaced at least 20 people, according to the Red Cross.
Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly, but they say the room was destroyed and the entire house is uninhabitable.
Spring Valley Chief Raymond Canario says the house had been illegally subdivided.
Officials say it's unclear who owns the multifamily home, but Douglas Perry, of the Spring Valley Buildings Department, says there are multiple violations in the building.
Fire officials say the fire itself appears to be accidental. It’s the second kitchen fire this month in the village.
The American Red Cross says it has opened a reception center at Spring Valley police headquarters to help the victims of the fire.
No one was injured in the fire.
