A New Hampton tire and repair shop was destroyed after a fast-moving fire engulfed the building Friday.
Firefighters worked feverishly to get the fire at Lee's Quality Tire on Dolsontown Road under control. Owners Lee and Ross Hubbert were inside with their employees when the fire started.
Bright orange flames spread like a flash, fueled by about 3,000 tires stocked inside. It sent thick, black smoke pouring from the building. Lee Hubbert says the flames went across the ceiling and engulfed the entire building in about two minutes. No one was hurt in the fire. The Hubberts think the fire started as some employees were working on a car's fuel tank. Fire investigators are still looking for the cause. Firefighters will be on alert through the weekend, checking on hot spots. Hazmat and Department of Environmental Conservation crews will also be at the building to deal with the environmental concerns stemming from the burnt tires.
