A car fire and fuel tank explosion led to the destruction of two vehicles Tuesday afternoon in White Plains, fire officials said.
Flames erupted from a Mercedes-Benz around 2 p.m. on Glenn Street between North Broadway and Harlem Avenue. News 12 was told by residents that they heard several loud bangs before the fire started.
Fire officials told News 12 that the fuel tank explosion led to a Metro-North van to catch fire. Fuel in the roadway also was set ablaze and extinguished with firefighting foam.
There was some damage to a utility pole and wires above the vehicles, but it is not believed to have caused any power outages.
The White Plains fire chief says the driver of the Mercedes suffered minor burns to his arms. He was in his car eating lunch when the incident happened. The chief said it was likely a "battery fire."
