A fire destroyed a multimillion-dollar home in Scarsdale early Monday morning.

Fire officials say flames broke out around 1 a.m. on the first floor of the home at 72 Mamaroneck Road.

Fire officials say about 80 to 100 firefighters from close to a dozen companies from around the area assisted in putting out the flames, and crews were able to put it out around 6:45 a.m.

Crews knocked the fire down on the first floor, then realized there was fire underneath them in the basement that started to travel up the walls, eventually getting into the attic.

Firefighting conditions were extremely hazardous as crews were battling not only the fire, but extremely heavy smoke, wind and dangerously cold temperatures. Due to the brutally cold temperatures, personnel had to be rotated out of warming buses, since it is hazardous to stay outside for any length of time.

"Just the amount of ice, the wind... it's still blowing so we had quite a bit of trouble with frozen lines, frozen hydrants," says Scarsdale Fire Department Chief James Seymour.

Several firefighters were taken to the hospital but for precautionary measures, officials say.

No other injuries were reported.

There is no word on a cause yet, but fire officials say the estimated $3.5 million house is being assessed to see if it has to be knocked down.
