Firefighter falls to death while responding to crash in Brooklyn

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro says Steven Pollard slipped through a gap of the Belt Parkway and fell approximately 52 feet.

An FDNY firefighter was killed Sunday night while responding to a car crash in Brooklyn.
At around 10 p.m., firefighters were called to the Belt Parkway just east of Flatbush Avenue for a car crash with injuries.
As they were going to help, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro says Steven Pollard slipped through a gap of the Belt Parkway and fell approximately 52 feet. He was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.
Pollard is the first firefighter killed in the line of duty since March.
Pollard, 30, was assigned to Ladder Company 170 in Canarsie. He comes from a family of firefighters, his father retired and his brother is assigned to Ladder Company 114.
