The first round of the U.S. Open got underway at Mamaroneck?s Winged Foot Golf Club Thursday.
Thousands of fans showed up to see their favorite pros, like Phil Mickleson, Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh, tee off. Many say they were pleased with the professional level of security, shuttle accommodations and the players? attitudes. The game of golf has long been rooted in Westchester, making the tournament a big draw.
The greens proved to be tough for many players, but David Howell managed to putt his way to the top of the leader board. Colin Montgomerie trails in the second spot. Montgomerie bounced back after bogeying two of the first three holes, making three birdies and seven pars over the final 10 holes. The Scotland native has four top-10 finishes at the U.S. Open, but hasn?t claimed a victory yet.
