First snow shuts down I-84
Nearly two months before the beginning of winter, the first snow of the season shut down Interstate 84 Tuesday afternoon, creating a traffic nightmare for drivers.
The highway was shut down in both directions due to heavy snowfall in the western portions of Orange County, Sullivan County and into Pennsylvania.
Motorists who ended up on I-84 were surprised by the uncommon October weather, as well as by the massive delays.
Two tractor-trailers got stuck on I-84 at Greenville Mountain near Port Jervis. Emergency crews directed traffic off the interstate at exit 3 heading toward 17M, which led to massive backups that forced drivers to scramble for alternatives routes.
