Fleet Week in NYC marred by alleged terror plot
Sailors who arrived in New York City for Fleet Week were greeted Thursday morning by news of an alleged homegrown terror plot that was foiled by the FBI.
Most of the military men and women News 12 Hudson Valley spoke with on the ships say learning of the plot makes them more vigilant.
"It raises our level of awareness," says Capt. Jarett Berke, of the U.S. Marine Corps. "For everyone we catch, there's 10 more out there we don't know of, so whether they're going to come from the water, they're going to come from land, attack ships or planes, we're trying to be ready."
Authorities say four men from Orange County conspired to bomb two Jewish sites in the Bronx and shoot down military planes at Stewart Air Force base in Newburgh. The alleged plot was uncovered while the suspects tried to purchase a guided missile and explosives from an FBI informant.
"I think it shows that the terrorists aren't winning, that we're still able to do things that we do," says Lt. Colin Turner, of the U.S. Coast Guard. "I think the enemy that we're fighting is constant, and I'll continue doing what I do."
