Friends of the woman who left her newborn baby on a doorstep in Yorktown one week ago say it was apparently an act of desperation. The woman's friends would not confirm her identity, but other sources say she is 30-year-old Karisnia Schiaffino, who lives with her husband Brian and their 8-year-old daughter in Jefferson Valley. Police say the woman?s infant boy was only a few hours old when he was found in a bassinet enclosed in a garbage bag. Antionette DeBellis runs an insurance agency across from the family's home on East Main Street and Susan Degregorie has a flower shop next door. Both women say their friend appears to have been desperate, and concerned about money and health care.Yorktown police and the District Attorney's office have obtained an arrest warrant charging the woman with child abandonment. Schiaffino is currently hospitalized but police say they plan to arrest her when she is released. Related Story
