Fuel spill temporarily shuts down Route 59 in Nyack
A tractor-trailer accident caused a fuel spill on Route 59 in Central Nyack Monday, temporarily shutting down the roadway.
The driver of the tractor-trailer told police he was hauling a dual portable generator westbound on Route 59 when he lost control of his vehicle. Witnesses say the truck spun around, causing its load to smash into a Brinks armored car. According to police, the armored car then smashed into a light pole, knocking it down.
?It looks like from the initial investigation, a piece of equipment that was holding the trailer onto the truck snapped, possibly causing [the driver] to lose control of the vehicle,? says Clarkstown Police Capt. Robert Mahon.
A white SUV was also struck in the accident. The driver of the armored car was taken to West Nyack Hospital for his injuries.
As a result of the crash, one of the two 100-gallon diesel fuel tanks carried by the generators was punctured. To watch interviews about the Central Nyack crash that led to a fuel spill, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select iO Extra.
