ACCORD - Friends and family gave a final salute today to a highly decorated soldier from the Hudson Valley who was killed in Afghanistan.

Loved ones are mourning the loss of 24-year-old Army Sgt. Shawn Farrell. His funeral was held today in Ulster County. The family chose to have the service at Skate Time in Accord because they say Farrell grew up playing there as a child.

After the ceremony, Farrell was buried with full military honors at Krumville Cemetery.

His body was initially flown into Stewart International Airport and escorted to his home.

Farrell was killed last month by enemy fire while on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. He leaves behind his wife, parents, three brothers and two sisters. His long list of military decorations and awards now includes the Purple Heart Medal of Honor for his ultimate sacrifice to his country.
