Friends and family said a final goodbye Saturday to the Peekskill couple that was beaten, strangled and burned inside their home, allegedly by the wife?s own son.
Hundreds of people filed into St. Peter's Church on North Division Street in Peekskill for a memorial service to mourn the loss of Thomas and Cathy Asaro, both 51 years old.
"I don't know what makes people snap like that," longtime friend Thomas Underwood says. "It's a shame ? two good people are gone."
Underwood knew Cathy Asaro?s son, 32-year-old Jason Bethea. He says Bethea seemed like a nice man at the time, but he had problems.
"He was in jail in Peru for trying to smuggle cocaine to the U.S.," Underwood says. "And Cathy and Tommy supported him financially."
Bethea is currently being held at the Westchester County Jail on two counts of second-degree murder while his case is presented to a grand jury. If convicted, Bethea could face life in prison.
